Somatic Groundwork uses all levels in space while spending a significant amount of time using the floor as partner. As a ground-based practice, it is important to have a clean and clear floor space the size of your body in star (laying down in the shape of X) . Both carpeted and wood flooring work well, and each provides different features. A smooth floor gives you the ability to move your body with little resistance. A carpeted floor is a bit more friendly to bony parts and tends to be warmer.

The practice does not require specialized equipment or clothing. Commonly, folks like to practice in soft, loose-fitting, breathable clothes that do not restrict movement. Any kind of exercise wear or comfy pajama-like clothing works well. Long legs and sleeves may be preferable depending on the practice. Some classes you can adapt to do outside, on your bed or in a chair.

Somatic Groundwork is a progressive practice. In the membership I take you through the steps to learn from the ground up and the inside out. Learn the ten basic patterns and then progress with the primary core support series, unwinding techniques and more..

explore natural movement skills + creative play

Each somatic movement online class is an experience of relating to the forces that move us. From yield to push to pull, within tension-compression, between arousal and depletion, and along the continuum of clarity and uncertainty, our inquiry is based in the lived experience of our body. You are also guided to tune into your inner body to track and follow sensations, feelings and impulses. The practice oscillates between specific studies of movement and organic expressions that arise from participation. In this way, Somatic Groundwork has both corrective and creative elements to support whole body organization.

The movement practice itself is a teaching for returning to what is basic and fundamental. Rocking, rolling, yielding, breathing, sounding, orienting, unwinding, pandiculating, folding and unfolding are the first techniques to explore. We remap the felt-sense of baseline: the place where tone (myofascial, vagal, autonomic, emotional) is balanced and harmonizing. These simple movements tap into patterns from our earliest development. In practice we relate with gravity, ground and space and track sensations like weight releasing, tensional forces flowing, and fluctuations between effort and ease. Our embodied research includes how we move and shape from the inside out.

These somatic refinements positively influence our proprioception and interoception. Together these sensory receptions give us the kinesthetic sense. Although Somatic Groundwork is a floor-based practice, all levels from the ground to standing are explored in the movement system. The first classes in the membership are tutorials on the Somatic Groundwork ten basic patterns.  From these fundamentals, Somatic Groundwork progresses the somatic skills gained from early developmental patterns to basic standing skills for stability, stamina and dynamic mobility. As we move between improvisation and shape-based studies we explore natural movement skills on all levels that includes swinging, bouncing, kneeling, crawling, squatting and lunging.

inclusive + trauma-informed guidance

Somatic Groundwork is a unique movement practice that tends to our neurobiology by paying attention to the experience of moving.  During practice, we have the potential to shift the quality of both our autonomic nervous system and global tissue tone.  The ability to feel-felt arises from our fascial matrix, our primary organ of exploration. The sensory fabric of this living tissue architecture has 250 million sensory receptors and when we pay attention to the sensing-perceiving-acting cycle, subtle to profound healing moments may appear.

Our subconscious holding patterns are revealed, come to light, as we practice systems sensing (tracking the relationships between felt-sense events). Sensations underlie movement organization and behavior which is why bottom-up practice, like somatic movement, is so potent for metabolizing trauma and discharging stacked-up energy.

Somatic Groundwork is guided with the intention of offering movement for nourishing goodness into the felt-sense experience of living. Because somatic inquiry does swirl around our roots, baked right into the Somatic Groundwork movement system is a harm reduction process called the first teachings.  The first teachings are essential ingredients that create good conditions for inner stability, embodied support and the permission to choose how you participate.

Classes are specifically guided with containment and grounding resources for support so that you can take care of impulses and charges that arise during practice. Over many years as a somatic movement guide: I cannot know what may show up for you on the somatic movement path, but what I can do is teach you how to prepare for your journey.  Somatic practice is about getting intimate with our lived experience as animating through our body consciousness. Just like I cannot know what parts of your perceptual artifacts will rise to the surface (conscious awareness) during your practice, I am also not privy to your lived experience. Somatic Groundwork allows you to get present with you.

Body in X, or star, is the minimum amount of space needed for practice.

a few notes:

Interdisciplinary Movement and Somatics teaches teachers and therapists how to implement the first teachings and how to guide somatic patterning through movement. Somatic patterning is a method of neuroplasticity which emphasizes bottom-up processing to facilitate change. Sensory awareness is a direct pathway to reclaiming the embodied self. Change the experience- change the pattern.  By tracking sensation through our living form, we learn to use our attention to shift, or modify, our neurobiology and motor function. Through the guided process of somatic patterning, we can down-regulate our defense strategies, influence the quality of our tissue architecture and modify muscular synergies.

Practitioners of Somatic Groundwork love the way the practice feels, much like a nurturing bodywork session.

Common words used to describe their experience includes grounded, spacious, renewed, calm, connected, present and peaceful. I personally feel more located or in place after practice. I am more receptive, grounded and light simultaneously, and spacious inside with a greater sense of my own boundaried-ness. And my felt-sense is one of basic centeredness. Sometimes I maintain that vibe for a few days, sometimes a few hours. What happens over time is that it becomes easier and quicker to transition to this felt-sense of settled ease in a wider array of conditions.
