Realize movement as a tonic medicine for therapeutic, functional and creative effects.

The Online Practice Space (OPS) teaches Somatic Groundwork.
Where most yoga classes end, with savasana and quiet rest, Somatic Groundwork begins. The first teaching is to rest and attune through somatic yielding.
With a variety of yielding practices to choose from, Somatic Groundwork builds the pattern of yielding into the embodied learning process. With yielding as a base, movement activities expand and become more complex to include all levels with varied positions.
From the comfort of your home, let the OPS guide you to discover how online somatic movement education is the perfect way to develop a personal practice.

“Somatic Groundwork combines four areas of interest and study: intuitive movement, nervous system health, the fascial nets and embodiment! It is like nothing I’ve ever tried! Embodied fascial intuitive bliss!”
Jessica Jastrzebski

“Somatic Groundwork Online Practice Space has given me lots of inspiration and motivation for the way I move and how I facilitate movement. I appreciate Kaila’s approach to movement and somatic exploration.”
Mass Dioloi

“Somatic Groundwork has helped me open areas in my body that became numb and dormant over time. My personal investigation has also brought a profound shift in how I teach which is now coming from a place of shared curiosity and empowerment through embodiment.”
Rebecca Berciunas

“I had issues with knee pain and was looking for non traditional relief. After joining the membership, I found that Somatic Groundwork was a perfect addition to my existing yoga and gave me a new perspective on movement and anatomy.”
Frank Blackenship

“Allowing the freedom of physical and spiritual movement to emerge, Somatic Groundwork brings us to our own place of healing and stillness.”
Barbara Archer

“I enjoy all the resources on the website. It really is great to be able to navigate through the different themes and concepts and to revisit and practise things that take longer to integrate. Kaila’s teachings have been an amazing companion and inspiration throughout these past 6 months.”
Joelle Pappas
dancer & choreographer
“I have an upright somatic movement practice and was looking for teachings to expand it, particularly to the floor. The effects of Somatic Groundwork feel unique in relation to other mind body practices. The membership website content and everything is incredibly good and I feel fortunate to have access”

What’s in the Online Practice Space?
When you subscribe to the OPS, get immediate access to an online library of somatic activities and classes. The library is highly organized and provides a plan for your somatic learning journey that begins on the ground floor with Yielding Practices. Learn how to use movement for neurofascial effects influencing body pain, tissue circulation, mood and autonomic tone. Next, explore Unwinding Methods and discover how to gently rinse your tissues and get fluids moving through a variety of creative ways. Then, discover Patterns of Organization and remap whole body movement patterns to enhance function through a developmental lens. In the Section Mixed Approaches, take classes that blend these approaches and target specific body areas and explore somatic themes. Inside the OPS, there are also several Somatic Groundwork Courses including one on “Core Support” that includes anatomy, research and movement design. All together, in the OPS there are 100 videos that range between 15 – 75 minutes.

body in star, or X, is the minimum amount of space needed for practice
What Do I Need for Practice?
As a ground-based practice, you will need a clean and open floor space the size of your body in star either lying down or standing (star is the shape of X). Both carpeted and wood flooring work well, and each provides different features. On a smooth floor there is less resistance when rocking, rolling and sliding. A carpeted floor is a bit more friendly to bony parts and will be warmer. There is no special equipment or clothing needed. Participants like to practice in soft, loose-fitting, breathable clothing so joint movement is unrestricted. Some classes you can do outside or adapt to a bed or chair. Movement is also done at mid-level and standing and particpants usually where socks or go barefoot. Fitted, light-weight shoes are also fine to wear.

People appreciate the way their bodymind feels after a class, much like a nourishing bodywork session.
After Somatic Groundwork participants say they are:
grounded
spacious
renewed
calm
connected
present
peaceful
still
revived
Somatic Groundwork develops a set of somatic skills to facilitate good changes in our lives. As our inner organization shifts, so does our way of relating.
Somatic Groundwork & the Neurofascial System
Many of our chronic ailments arise from pushing our way through life with an empty tank. Modern people commonly experience chronic body aches, pain and fatigue; repetitive injury; emotional angst; poor sleep and digestion. Somatic Groundwork is a tonic medicine in the form of movement that can help with these pervasive symptoms. Tonic medicine is something you take or apply regularly that helps to restore system harmony. Somatic Groundwork does this by influencing the neurofascial system leading to improvements in state, structure and mood.
The neurofascial system is an integrated functional network combining the nervous system and fascial matrix. Both the neural network and the tissue architecture serve to support, protect and stabilize our body’s regulatory functions. Through somatic activities and basic movements we can target the neurofascial system in a particular way to encourage the relaxation response, restore tissue gliding mechanics and redistribute tensional energy.
Tonic practices require repetition over time. Just like brushing your teeth daily or washing your clothes, somatic movement practice is a thing to do regularly that in turn benefits health and vitality. You will feel the positive difference after one class, similar to the good feelings of a nourishing meal, lively conversation or time spent in nature. And with several sessions a week over the course of a month, you will notice progressive learning in the form of new attitudes, expanded movement options and energy renewal.
Online Practice Space is for:
those who desire alternative wellness practices
movement teachers and therapists
creative movement artists and explorers
people new to somatic movement (no prior experience needed)
